Printing wine labels is a specialty that only a very few select label companies have mastered. Most printers, even label printers will subcontract to the handful of wine label printers in the California wine region that have made this niche their specialty. Generally short runs under 25,000 sets are printed digitally and larger runs over 25,000 sets are printed flexo to cut unit costs. Each label is unique and has its own set of challenges. Every factor needs to be taken into consideration to have a successful final product, starting with the basics of the wine stocks which have unique characteristics that must be carefully understood. For example the face of the stock usually has a texture and may be an off white color. This requires a special primer to be printed perfectly under the graphics to allow the image color to remain true and the printing to be crisp. If a mobile bottler applies the labels it usually will go through an automatic label machine, and must meet certain criteria to work efficiently in their machines. For example the liner used is made from a stronger material than a standard label liner. The adhesive used for a white wine must meet the ice bucket test which requires the label to adhere when submerged in a bucket of ice.

If the label is going to be decorated with hot stamping or embossing it must have several expensive primers and coated many times to form a base that will allow foils to adhere properly . The graphics printed on the labels must have layers of protection to keep from scratching off during packaging and shipping. Graphics scratching off is one of the most common complaints of small wineries that fail to use a specialist.

The label is a mini-billboard that advertises the wine sometimes for years. A wise investment in labels can pay dividends now and in the future.
